Luce Gallery è lieta di presentare la prima mostra personale di Chen Tianyi, nato a Nanjing, Cina, nel 1996 e attualmente residente a Tokyo.
Con The Mayfly, l’artista presenta una nuova serie di dipinti nella sua prima mostra personale in Europa.
Un battito d’ali breve ed effimero attraversa questa mostra, sospeso tra il tempo e la dissolvenza. Le opere si muovono come ricordi che affiorano nei vicoli della mente, familiari eppure irraggiungibili. Qui, il paesaggio urbano non è un luogo ma uno stato emotivo, un labirinto in cui il presente si piega al sogno. Le figure emergono e svaniscono, come memorie che resistono alla chiarezza. La pittura diventa soglia: tra il visibile e l’invisibile, tra ciò che è stato e ciò che potrebbe essere. L’artista costruisce metafore surreali che non chiedono di essere spiegate, ma attraversate. Ogni tela è un frammento di coscienza, un’eco di esperienze oltre le parole. In questo spazio, il quotidiano si trasfigura in visione. E lo spettatore è invitato a perdersi, come in un ricordo che si rifiuta di finire.
“Vagare. Camminare di notte.
Una visione ininterrotta del tempo.
Nelle strade di una terra straniera, immagino me stesso come una ‘efemera’ (mayfly) nella città—sospeso tra realtà e sogno, fermo al loro punto d’intersezione mentre cerco coordinate perdute lungo rampe ascendenti. I pigmenti minerali granulari (iwaenogu) che impiego agiscono sia come detriti del tempo sia come ancore della memoria. Attraverso stratificazione, macinazione ed esfoliazione, luce e ombra vengono rese quasi eterne, completando un respiro dell’esistenza che si estende attraverso i millenni."
Tradizionalmente, l’efemera—che vive all’alba e muore al tramonto—è stata una metafora estrema della transitorietà. Nella mia pratica, tuttavia, questa figura trascende le sue connotazioni biologiche e poetiche per diventare una condizione esistenziale: un ritmo continuo e fluido di vagare e camminare notturno all’interno del tessuto sconosciuto della città.”
Intitolata The Mayfly, la mostra presenta la recente indagine di Chen sul rapporto tra identità individuale e spazio urbano. Avendo vissuto all’estero per molti anni, l’artista non sperimenta il vagare come sradicamento, ma come una costante oscillazione tra realtà e sogno, tra il familiare e l’estraneo. Questa condizione risuona con ciò che egli definisce “Area Intermedia”: una zona liminale che non è né completamente oggettiva né interamente soggettiva.
In queste opere, strade notturne, luci tremolanti e rampe che si intersecano cessano di funzionare come semplici soggetti visivi. Diventano invece paesaggi psicologici—dilatati dal tempo e filtrati attraverso la memoria. La materialità dei pigmenti minerali, formatisi nel corso di epoche geologiche, entra in dialogo con l’immediatezza del gesto, generando una superficie carica di tensione. Ogni strato diventa una traccia del passaggio fugace dell’efimera, registrando una struttura temporale dell’esperienza—ciò che si potrebbe descrivere come un continuo dispiegarsi tra ritenzione e anticipazione.
La serie Ramp trova qui un’ulteriore espansione. Attraverso radicali cambiamenti di prospettiva, forme architettoniche stabili rivelano una instabilità intrinseca. Questa instabilità rispecchia la continua negoziazione dell’identità del viandante all’interno di un contesto culturale straniero. Attraverso la lente dell’“anemoia”—una nostalgia per luoghi mai vissuti personalmente—Chen costruisce geografie collettive e immaginate sulla superficie pittorica.
“Sebbene la vita di un’efemera sia fugace, il suo volo occupa lo spazio in modo assoluto. Allo stesso modo, il viaggio solitario del camminatore notturno incontra la densità del tempo attraverso il movimento.” Chen Tianyi invita lo spettatore in un silenzioso mondo notturno composto da strati minerali, dove emergono momenti di affetto effimeri ma autentici—delicati, luminosi e transitori, come le ali di un’efemera.

Biografia
Chen Tianyi (n. 1996, Nanjing, Cina), vive e lavora a Tokyo.
Si è laureato presso la Central Academy of Fine Arts nel 2018 e ha conseguito il Master of Fine Arts presso la Tama Art University e la Tokyo University of the Arts rispettivamente nel 2022 e nel 2024. Luce Gallery is proud to present the first Solo Exhibition by Chen Tianyi, born in Nanjing, China, 1996 and living in Tokyo.
In “The Mayfly”, the Artist is presenting a series of new paintings in his first solo exhibition in Europe.
A brief, ephemeral flutter of wings sweeps through this exhibition, suspended between time and fading. The works move like memories surfacing in the mind's lanes, familiar yet unreachable. Here, the urban landscape is not a place but an emotional state, a labyrinth where the present bends to dream. Figures emerge and vanish, like memories that resist clarity. Painting becomes a threshold: between the visible and the invisible, between what has been and what could be. The artist constructs surreal metaphors that ask not to be explained, but to be traversed. Each canvas is a fragment of consciousness, an echo of experiences beyond words. In this space, the everyday is transfigured into vision. And the viewer is invited to lose themselves, as if in a memory that refuses to end.
"Wandering. Night-walking.
An uninterrupted overview of time.
On the streets of a foreign land, I imagine myself as a 'Mayfly' in the city—suspended between reality and dream, pausing at their intersection while searching for lost coordinates along ascending ramps. The granular mineral pigments (iwaenogu) I employ act both as debris of time and as anchors of memory. Through layering, grinding, and exfoliation, light and shadow are rendered almost eternal, completing a breath of existence that stretches across millennia.
Traditionally, the Mayfly—living at dawn and dying at dusk—has served as an extreme metaphor for transience. In my practice, however, this figure transcends its biological and poetic connotations to become an existential condition: a continuous, fluid rhythm of wandering and night-walking within the unfamiliar fabric of the city.”
Titled The Mayfly, the exhibition presents Chen’s recent investigation into the relationship between individual identity and urban space. Having lived abroad for many years, the artist does not experience wandering as rootlessness, but as a constant oscillation between reality and dream, the familiar and the estranged. This condition resonates with what he defines as an “Intermediate Area”: a liminal zone that is neither fully objective nor entirely subjective.
In these works, nocturnal streets, flickering lights, and intersecting ramps cease to function as mere visual subjects. Instead, they become psychological landscapes—stretched by time and filtered through memory. The materiality of mineral pigments, formed over geological epochs, enters into dialogue with the immediacy of gesture, generating a surface charged with tension. Each layer becomes a trace of the mayfly’s fleeting passage, recording a temporal structure of experience—what might be described as a continuous unfolding between retention and anticipation.
The Ramp series in the exhibition finds further expansion here. Through radical shifts in perspective, stable architectural forms reveal an inherent instability. This instability mirrors the wanderer’s ongoing negotiation of identity within a foreign cultural context. Through the lens of “anemoia”—a nostalgia for places never personally experienced—Chen constructs collective, imagined geographies across the pictorial surface.
“Although the life of a Mayfly is fleeting, its flight occupies space absolutely. Likewise, the solitary journey of the nightwalker encounters the density of time through movement.” Chen Tianyi invites viewers into a quiet nocturnal world composed of mineral layers, where ephemeral yet authentic moments of affect emerge—delicate, luminous, and transient, like the wings of a Mayfly. A confrontation with time. A return to the self.
Biography
Chen Tianyi (b. 1996, in Nanjing, China), lives and works in Tokyo.
He graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts as an undergraduate in 2018 and Received his MFA from Tama Art University and Tokyo University of the Arts in 2022 and 2024 respectively.
